Members Invited to Sponsor New Faculty Participation in SVHE New
Teachers Workshop, July 22-26, 2001

The Society for Values in Higher Education (SVHE) offers a highly
beneficial summer workshop for new faculty assuming their first
full-time college or university teaching position. Colleges and
universities who have hired new faculty for the fall are invited
to provide travel support for their new faculty to participate in
an intensive orientation to college level teaching, learning theory,
and institutional citizenship. Held July 22-26 on the campus of
Alfred University in New York State, the SVHE Workshop for New Teachers
is staffed by experienced faculty who themselves are superb teachers
at small to mid-sized institutions. SVHE provides registration and
room/board costs and asks that participants also attend the annual
SVHE Conference, also held at Alfred, July 26-30. SVHE's membership
consists of higher education faculty and administrators and professionals
from the wider world who care about values issues in education such
as integrity, diversity, democracy, and social justice. The core
of the annual conference is a series of interdisciplinary morning
group seminars that explore values questions and higher education
issues in scholarly ways.
ANAC members interested in sponsoring the travel costs of one or
more of their new faculty should contact Jerry Berberet (anacjberb@aol.com,
ph 850-927-3948) or Sherry Stock at the SVHE office (society@pdx.edu,
ph. 503-725-2575). For more information on the Workshop or the SVHE

Associated New American Colleges
Woodrow Wilson Summer Institute
2001
Implementing A New Compact in
Faculty-Institutional Relationships
Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY - June 14-16, 2001
Registration Form: Please Submit to Woodrow
Wilson Foundation by May 1, 2001
The Associated New American Colleges (ANAC) invite participants
from across higher education to join in efforts to implement ANAC's
call for collaboration between faculty members and the institutions
where they work. This is the central recommendation of the report,
A New Academic Compact, from ANAC's four-year faculty work
project, funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts, to be published by
Anker Press in the Fall. A New Compact is grounded in the
assumption that higher education's mission, students, and faculty
professionalism and satisfaction are best served through a faculty-institutional
relationship based on mutuality and reciprocity.
ANAC member colleges and universities are invited to send teams
of faculty and administrators to participate in the Institute, both
those who are already underway in report implementation and those
who wish to use the Institute to begin to consider institutional
implications of A New Compact. Special attention will be
given to the role of department chairs. Because A New Compact
addresses the full spectrum of issues in aligning faculty work and
institutional policies and practices with mission, e.g., hiring,
workload, faculty development, evaluation, rewards, governance,
and career stages, every ANAC member will find support in focusing
on its particular institutional concerns and priorities. Speakers,
resource persons, and Institute sessions will be geared to this
range of issues to assist each team in developing plans for implementation
back on campus.
Participating teams should consist of at least two department
chairs and are encouraged to include other faculty leaders such
as the chair or a member of the faculty rank and tenure or personnel
committee. NB: To enable the Institute to function effectively,
each team is asked to submit by May 15 a 1-2 page description of
the issue/problem the team will address during the Institute.
If you have questions regarding the Institute program, contact Jerry
Berberet, ANAC Executive Director, 2248 Sailfish Dr., St. George,
Island, FL 32328. (Ph 850-927-3948, Email anacjberb@aol.com)
