Institute to Focus on Report Implementation

|
The Associated New American Colleges have
entered into an agreement with Anker Press, a major publisher of
higher education works on faculty and professional development topics,
for fall 2001 publication of A New Academic Compact: Revisioning
the Relationship between Faculty and Their Institutions.
Arguing that information society pressures on higher education values
and structures require stronger reciprocity between colleges and
universities and their critical human resource-the faculty-this
volume is the product of ANAC's five-year Faculty Work Project.
Anker Press' advance publication announcement is part of this issue
of the Bulletin. (Story continued below.)

Press to Publish Faculty Work Project Report (cont.)

Supported
with two grants from The Pew Charitable Trusts, the project initially
completed during 1997-98 a comprehensive assessment of faculty perceptions
in conjunction with The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement
of Teaching's 1997 National Survey of Faculty. The assessment phase
was followed by a 1999-2000 think tank of faculty and academic administrators
from nineteen ANAC members that resulted in the volume's analysis
and recommendations. The work focuses particularly on the roles
of faculty professional development, institutional governance and
service, and workload differentiation in a context of faculty and
academic unit accountability and rewards. The goal-to achieve optimal
alignment between faculty and institutional policies and practices
in order to best serve the institutional mission, e.g., student
learning and developmental well-being at ANAC colleges and universities.
The ANAC Woodrow Wilson Summer Institute 2001
will be held June 14-16 at Ithaca College. The thematic
focus will be on development of institutional strategies to address
campus faculty work issues, taking advantage of the Institute's
program which is being organized around A New Academic Compact.
ANAC members are asked to register by May 1, as institutional
teams and to submit a problem statement by May 15, in order
to prepare for effective team deliberations using the resources
of the Institute. The Institute program is designed particularly
to assist department chairs to play effective roles in strengthening
the partnership between faculty, departments, and the larger institution.
The full Institution announcement and registration form are included
with this issue of the Bulletin.
