The just released US News rankings for 2005 place fifteen ANAC member colleges and universities in the top fifteen Masters institutions in their respective region, an impressive record considering that the Masters classification includes more than 600 institutions. Five other ANAC members were also highly ranked. Valparaiso University, ranked second among Midwest Masters institutions, once again led the way among ANAC members.
The ANAC Symposium on the Future of Higher Education, June 14-15, at Drury University, both served as a successful initiation of ANAC first decade anniversary events and set the bar high in measuring ANAC significance in national higher education circles. The symposium engaged key issues that will shape higher education’s well-being over the coming decade:
- Student demographics and admissions patterns
- Liberal education’s challenge to address theory and practice and regain national significance
- Roles of technology and design of physical space in student learning for the future
- National politics and the reauthorization of higher education act
- Meeting the needs of institutions and their faculties
- Developing effective higher education leadership
The symposium featured an outstanding cast of speakers, including Carol Geary Schneider (president, AACU); David Warren (president, NAICU); Peter Kuttner (president, Cambridge Seven Associates); Shaila Aery (principal, The Artemis Group); George Dehne (president, GDA Integrated Services); JoAnn Haysbert, (provost, Hampton University and president-elect, Langston University); and ANAC member presidents JamesAppleton (Redlands), David Maxwell (Drake); Hal Wilde (North Central), Jay Lemons (Susquehanna), Richard Guarasci (Wagner), and Drury host president John Sellars.
