Big ANAC news of the 2003 summer includes
creation of ANAC Academy and the largest ANAC Summer Institute in
history. Newly named campus coordinators from seventeen ANAC member
institutions gathered at Hampton University, June 17-18,
to develop a blueprint for Academy programming. Susan Traverso,
a veteran participant in the ANAC faculty work project and associate
professor of history at North Central College, has been named
the Academy's founding director. Initial programming for the Academy
will include a website and online networking and sharing of good
practices among faculty and staff at ANAC member institutions, and
sponsorship of campus-based and online faculty and staff professional
development workshops and conferences. The Academy will develop
programming that supports the missions of ANAC member institutions
and avoids duplication of what other higher education associations
offer, with a particular focus on the enhancement of student learning.
Held at Hampton University, June 18-21, ANAC summer Institute
2003 featured the theme, "Designing Integrative Learning for
Integrative Institutions." Of the ANAC summer institutes held
since the first in 1996, this was the largest, attracting more than
ninety registered participants, including thirteen ANAC member and
two guest institution teams of faculty and academic and student
affairs administrators and participants from eighteen member institutions.
Collaboration between academic and student affairs was a special
Institute focus as a means of turning a variety of student experiences
into connected learning situations. The Institute also introduced
several techniques for deliberative dialogue in order to foster
inter-group understanding and improved decision-making.
Highlights of the just completed commencement season include peacemaker
and former US Senator George Mitchell's graduation speech at Susquehanna
University which made the New York Times June 1 round-up
story, Christiane Amanpour's reception of the Fred Friendly First
Amendment Award at Quinnipiac University, and the marathon
of nine commencement ceremonies involving more than 1,500 graduates
at the nine colleges and two campuses of Mercer University
during the period of May 3-31. But the most memorable commencement
event may be the Belmont University graduation of triplets
(Jessica, Jocelyn, and Jaclyn Kerr), all with GPAs over 3.9 and
the former two earning summa cum laude honors!
