ANAC to Establish ANAC Academy; Receives Grant from TIAA-CREF Institute; Register Your Team for ANAC Summer Institute, June 18-21

ANAC members have voted to establish ANAC Academy, a national faculty and staff professional development center, uniquely attuned to the character and needs of private comprehensive colleges and universities. ANAC Academy will be closely aligned with the individual programs and aspirations of ANAC member institutions. The Academy will collaborate with national associations to enhance resources available to ANAC members, but the Academy niche will be in providing valuable programs that other organizations do not offer. Programs will originate from the Academy directly, from member campuses, and from online sources.

The TIAA-CREF Institute has awarded ANAC a grant to survey senior faculty perceptions of late career and retirement issues. Being developed in collaboration with the University of North Carolina and University of Minnesota systems, the survey will enable comparisons to be made of faculty views on both public and private campuses at several types of four-year institutions. Survey results will help to design appropriate senior faculty professional development programs as part of ANAC Academy, to match senior faculty expertise and interests with institutional needs, to assist faculty and their institutions to plan for retirement transitions, and to make it easier for retiring faculty and their institutions to establish mutually beneficial emeritus status relationships.

Members are asked to register teams by May 1, for the ANAC Summer Institute, June 18-21, at Hampton University. Pursuing the theme, "Designing Integrative Learning for Integrative Colleges and Universities," the Institute will explore learning intersections in liberal and professional studies, international education, community engagement, K-16 school integration, and diversity and general education. Special attention will be given to democratic pedagogies and to integrative learning connecting academic and student affairs. Hampton's welcoming campus - "Our Home by the Sea"; the University's superb Museum of African, African American, and Native American artifacts; an Institute dinner cruise on the Spirit of Norfolk; and the historic sites around Hampton (e.g., Jamestown, Yorktown, Colonial Williamsburg, and Fort Monroe) make the 2003 Institute an unusual opportunity to combine "good work" and a rich immersion in historic Americana.
