Hamline University will be ANACSA “Home” Campus – Fall 2005 Launch

Hamline University has been named “home” campus for ANAC Study Abroad (ANACSA), scheduled to begin offering programs in Fall 2005. ANACSA will have a coordinator whose office will be at Hamline. A search is underway to name the coordinator in the late summer. An ANACSA implementation plan is being developed this summer which will be finalized after the coordinator takes office.
At their June 16 meeting, ANAC institutional representatives approved five member study abroad programs, chosen for “featured” status (having interdisciplinary, applied, and/or professional curricular features), to constitute the initial ANACSA offering in Fall 2005. In addition to promoting these programs, the ANACSA website will list member semester and short-term programs open to students from other ANAC institutions. The five featured programs are:
- Drake University Work (English teaching) and Study Program in China.
- Drury University Program in Volos, Greece (includes community planning project)
- Hamline Program in Saint Louis, Senegal (hosted by Universite Gaston Berger)
- Pacific Lutheran University Program in Merida, Mexico (in conjunction with University of Yucatan and especially designed for business, education, and nursing students)
- University of Redlands Program in Salzburg, Austria. Has applied project component and extensive travel in Greece and Italy.
Detailed information on these programs and how to participate in ANACSA will be available this fall.

“Emerging Leaders” Workshop, October 7-9, Initiates ANAC Academy 2004-05 Program

Hamline University will host ANAC Academy’s initial 2004-05 event, an “Emerging Leaders” workshop geared especially for mid-career faculty and experienced professional staff who have just assumed positions (e.g., department or division chair, program or office director, assistant or associate dean) or aspire to roles of significant institutional leadership. The workshop is being designed especially to help in preparing for leadership roles in ANAC type institutions. ANAC members are encouraged to send institutional teams in order to address high priority leadership issues in ways that will increase the workshop’s impact back on campus. Individuals are also invited to register for the workshop.
Jon Wergin, nationally-recognized for his expertise in higher education leadership studies, faculty work and professional satisfaction, and institutional and departmental effectiveness, will facilitate the workshop program. He will introduce participants to concepts such as “adaptive change” and “leadership in place,” developed over many years of working with and studying colleges and universities. As a past ANAC consultant, he is familiar with ANAC member institutions and committed to their mission and faculty and staff professional well-being. Wergin is director of Antioch University’s Ph.D. program in educational leadership studies. Successful leadership practices on member campuses will also be featured in workshop sessions.
Chief academic officers on ANAC member campuses have received the workshop announcement, including registration information, and a workshop flyer will become available in mid-August. For more information immediately, contact Jerry Berberet (anacjberb@aol.com or 850-927-3948) or Alan Silva, Associate Dean, Arts and Sciences, Hamline University (asilva@gw.hamline.edu or 651-523-2643).
ANAC Summer Institute 2004 (June 16-19, Hampton University) – Largest in ANAC History

During For the first time in ANAC’s nine-year history, the Summer Institute attracted more than ninety participants, including teams from eighteen member institutions and two visiting institutions. The theme, “First-Year Experiences: Sites for Engaged Learning at Comprehensive Institutions,” provided a framework to examine best practices in first-year student and new faculty and staff orientation programs, both to enhance student learning and retention and to facilitate a “good fit” between new faculty and staff and their institutions.
Hampton University proved once again to be a gracious and hospitable host at their beautiful campus “home by the sea.” Susan Traverso, director of ANAC Academy, coordinated the Institute. Among the keynote speakers:
- President Richard Guarasci, Wagner College
- Jillian Kinzie, Associate Director, NSSE Institute for Effective Educational Practice
- Linda McMillin, Provost, Susquehanna University
- Marcia B. Baxter-Magolda, professor of Educational Leadership, Miami University of Ohio
ANAC Summer Institute 2005 will be held June 15-18, at Drury University on the theme of faculty and staff professional identity in a changing academy.

Drury students complete 2 weightless NASA flights.
ANAC Member Commencement Speakers from Hamilton to Hastert

The spring 2004 commencement season at ANAC member institutions featured a range
of traditions and distinctive ceremonial rituals. As well, the choice of commencement speakers reflected a range of possibilities. At Ithaca College Scott Hamilton, 1984 Olympic gold medal winner in figure skating and cancer survivor, spoke of lessons he learned in overcoming several tragedies in his life and encouraged graduates to seek the blessings in adversity and to use positive energy to take the high road in life.
Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, spoke at North Central College, the last ANAC member commencement of the season on June12. Although he played on North Central’s 1960 championship football team, Hastert declared that the visit to campus that year of Martin Luther King, Jr. was the greater thrill. He said he was impressed with North Central’s leadership in inviting King to speak and received lifelong inspiration from King’s challenge to “follow your dreams and do your best to reach your potential.”
Institutional Representatives and CFO’s Hold Summer Meetings

ANAC institutional representatives and chief finance officers held their summer meetings, June 16 at Hampton and July 17 in Milwaukee, respectively. In addition to approving an implementation plan for ANACSA and sites for the 2005-07 ANAC summer institutes (Drury in 2005, North Central in 2006, Elon in 2007), IReps approved the 2004-05 ANAC budget and endorsed ANAC Academy plans and the initiative to create an ANAC NSSE consortium. CFO’s named Bruce Arick of Butler as their representative on the ANAC Executive Committee and heard presentations from David Kadamus of Sightlines LLC on energy management planning and Ken and Linda Cool on the Emeriti Retirement Health Program. Both groups did program planning for their joint CFO/CAO conference at Butler, March 17-19, 2005.
