Red Rule Fall 2004 Edition

A New Academic Year with Important ANAC Initiatives

To date the young academic year has featured ANAC member enrollment growth, continued US News recognition, noteworthy student and faculty achievements, and ambitious new programs and fundraising campaigns. Keeping pace, ANAC has put the pieces in place for the fall 2005 launch of ANACSA, offered an ANAC Academy “Emerging Leaders” workshop for mid-career faculty and staff, and expanded the benchmarking scope of the ANAC Data Exchange. Members are invited to list in the ANACSA program directory their study abroad programs that invite student participation from other member institutions.

To observe the first ANAC decade, the ANAC communications project is moving forward with higher education association visits in Washington, DC, a Chicago planning meeting in November, and an ANAC member presidents panel at the January 2005 AACU Conference in San Francisco on emerging characteristics of the higher education academy. The initial phase of the communications project will culminate in a national symposium at Drury University on the future of higher education, June 13-15, just prior to ANAC Summer Institute 2005 at Drury, June 15-18. The communications project is designed to expand ANAC contributions to the academy’s educational and service mission in society, primarily through strengthening working relationships with national higher education associations.

ANAC is also preparing for a busy round of member affinity group meetings and conferences early in 2005:

  • January 26 – Study abroad directors and chief academic officers meet just prior to annual AACU conference, San Francisco.
  • January 29 – Institutional Representatives meet immediately following AACU conference, San Francisco.
  • January 31 – Presidents Council meets just prior to opening of annual NAICU conference, Washington, DC.
  • March 17-19 – Joint chief academic officer/CFO benchmarking conference, Butler University, Indianapolis.
  • March 21 – Chief student affairs officers meet during annual NASPA conference, Tampa.

Don’t miss the Peter Bardaglio (provost, Ithaca College) commentary in this Bulletin on global sustainability education and the dramatic implications it has for transforming colleges and universities. Peter’s comments on the academy’s civic responsibility mirrors ANAC member efforts through the fall to inform and encourage students regarding participation in the recent presidential election.

Finally, Eugene Rice, longtime director of the AAHE Faculty Roles and Rewards Program and good friend and advisor to ANAC, has retired. Gene was a mainstay of the ANAC Faculty Work Project and much appreciated across ANAC member campuses. Best wishes, Gene, for this new phase of your career! Happy Holidays to all!
