Appraisal of Artwork at Sage Uncovers Valuable Treasures

A year long search through the brownstone buildings of Russell
Sage College at The Sage Colleges has turned up a remarkable trove of
rare antiques and art pieces in places as unlikely as basements, maintenance garages, and
attics. The total worth is placed at nearly $1,000,000, including a neoclassical portrait,
valued at $500,000, by British artist John William Godward that hung in a residence hall
for sixty years. The decision to conduct the audit occurred in 1997, when the college was
preparing its master plan, as a way of reconnecting with its past in planning for the
future. |
Two More ANAC Institutional Representatives Announce Retirement

ANAC Chair Elizabeth Ivey, Provost at Hartford,
has announced that she will retire as Provost at the end of the 1999-2000 academic year.
She will return to Hartford during the following year to assist with preparations for
Hartford's regional reaccreditation and to work in an area of one of her first
loves--science education and encouraging women to pursue careers in science. Betty
succeeded Zeddie Bowen as ANAC Chair in June 1998. Her low-key and clear-headed leadership
style will be missed.
Douglas Steeples, dean of arts and sciences and ANAC institutional representative at Mercer,
has also announced his retirement at the end of the current academic year. Doug indicates
that he will continue to live in the Macon area where he will be able to stay in touch
with Mercer and ANAC. Doug is cherished by his ANAC colleagues for such contributions as
stout-hearted defense of liberal learning, flawlessly argued contrary positions on points
of ANAC doctrine, and early morning bagpiping over hill and dale at Saint Mary's
College of California during the Woodrow Wilson Summer Institute. |
Many ANAC Member
Institutions Are Completing Capital Construction Projects

Students returning for fall classes at Drury College were
greeted with a new technology center named Springfield Hall whose 110 high end computers
(500 MHz with peripherals including zip drives, lazer printers, and over-sized color
scanners and printers for graphics and architectural drawings) will be available for
student use 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The new building houses a mailing center
(similar to Mailboxes, etc.), a Kinko's style copy shop, a "cyber" café and a
larger café, and four computer labs. Drury also dedicated its new Quasquicentennial Plaza
(ellipse with two fountains) in honor of donors to the college's quasquicentennial
campaign at the termination of Drury Lane, the college entrance drive which has also been
beautified.
Mercer University is completing the renovation of its hallmark
Administration Building, a centerpiece of many construction and renovation projects as
part of the five-year, $126 million Mercer 2000: Advancing the Vision Campaign. North
Central College has just completed a new concrete 5,500 seat football and track
stadium that will also house classrooms, offices, locker rooms, and assorted athletic
facilities. Many ANAC members are constructing new science and other academic buildings,
athletic facilities, and residence halls whose completion will be reported in the Bulletin
as news is received. |
Valparaiso
University Fell to Yale University

On the gridiron on Saturday, September 25, in the famous and
historic Yale Bowl, but the early Autumn trek to New England was memorable for a Valpo
contingent of several hundred students, faculty, alumni, friends, and university
officials. In commenting on the game, President Alan Harre noted that the contest was even
in the trenches, but that the Yale athletes were "too quick at the skill
positions." |
Finally,
a Trip down Memory Lane at Saint Mary's College of California

Remember that famous 1959 photograph of 21 Saint Mary's
College students crammed into a phone booth? Well, the famous photo by Joe Munroe
appears on p. 76 of Life magazine's October "Great
Pictures of the Century" collector's edition. Them were the days! |
