Student Exchange
Introduction & FAQ

Whether you’re an indie rocker or a classical musician, a public artist or an aspiring curator, a politico or a social justice advocate, or you simply want a change in perspective, the Student Exchange may be the right opportunity for you.

As a student at one of the 13 New American Colleges and Universities participating in the exchange, you have a dozen options for a semester away from your own campus.

Why spend a semester at another college or university?

There are many reasons to consider a semester on another campus. Perhaps you want to take courses in a field not offered on your campus, experience a different geography or climate, secure the perfect internship to build your resume, or meet students from another part of the country or world. The Student Exchange is the experience that expands your horizons in one semester.

What programs are available through Student Exchange?

With 13 participating campuses, the opportunities are extensive. Consider the city as your classroom in urban-based programs in Boston, Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. Complete an internship in New York’s or Illinois state capital. Find out how winter sports competition heats up the slopes in Utah and Pennsylvania. Visit Music City for a hands-on look at the music business in Nashville, or try your hand at weather forecasting in the Midwest. Learn about entrepreneurship in Indiana, or engage in community service in North Carolina. It’s your call, and the possibilities are seemingly endless. For a complete listing, please visit here.

What are other benefits of the Student Exchange program?

Because you will study at an institution that has a pre-existing collaboration with your home campus, you will find that processes, from applications to credit transfers, are streamlined. You get to travel to another part of the country without the hassle of taking a leave of absence. Your financial aid remains intact, and you do not pay any additional tuition. Credits are fully transferable, though it is always advisable to check your final course selections with the registrar at your home institution.

How do Student Exchange programs reflect our mission of combining liberal arts education, professional studies and civic engagement?

Many of the Exchange opportunities include field study, internships and special projects. All New American Colleges and Universities are committed to our mission – just like your home institution – meaning you still receive a top-quality education that connects theory to practice and thought to action, no matter where you are.
